102. Thian-hô ná-chhiūⁿ lâu ji̍p i ê hûn-su

Yoko lak lo̍h ê jī-lâu khòaⁿ-tâi téng, ū nn̄g-saⁿ-ki chhâ thiāu khi lo̍h-lâi, tī Yoko ê bīn téng-koân hia tih sio. Yoko he ē chhak--lâng ê súi ba̍k-chiu kheh-kheh, ē-hâi taⁿ-taⁿ, ām-kún chhun-chhun. Hóe-kuiⁿ tī yi pe̍h sún-sún ê bīn-téng iô-tāng.

Shimamura hut-jiân siūⁿ-khí, kúi-nî chêng i lâi chit-ê un-chôaⁿ e̍k-tiûⁿ hām Komako sio-hōe, tī hóe-chhia lāi khòaⁿ tio̍h iá-gōa ê teng-hóe chiò tī Yoko ê bīn ê chêng-kéng, sim-koaⁿ iū-koh phi̍h-pho̍k chùn. Hut-jiân-kan, he hóe-kuiⁿ ká-ná mā chiò chhut i hām Komako chit kúi-nî lâi ê tāi-chì. Chit tiong-kan iā chhiong-móa chi̍t-chióng kóng bē chhut ê khó͘-thàng hām pi-ai.

Komako ùi Shimamura sin-piⁿ ná poe án-ne cháu chhut-lâi. Che hām yi chiam-kiò, om ba̍k-chiu chha-put-to sī kāng chi̍t-ê sî-kan, mā sī chiòng-lâng suh chi̍t-kháu léng-khùi ê hit-ê sî-chūn. 

Tī sì-kè lak, chìm chúi ê o͘ chhâ sap tiong-kan, Komako thoa he gē-tòaⁿ tn̂g-tn̂g ê saⁿ-á-ki chông kòe. Yi kā Yoko phō tī heng-chêng kiâⁿ tún lâi. Tī yi he kan-khó͘ kah kiù-kin ê bīn ē-bīn, Yoko sûi-lo̍h ê bīn sí-pe̍h, bô-piáu-chêng. Komako só͘ phō ê, ká-ná sī ka-tī ê hi-seng, ka-tī ê chōe-gia̍t.

Chiòng-lâng hī-hōa-kiò, chi̍t-ē-á tō kā yin nn̄g-lâng ûi tio̍h.

"Siám. Chhiáⁿ siám-khui."

Shimamura thiaⁿ tio̍h Komako ê hoah siaⁿ.

"Chit-ê gín-á, khí-siáu, khí-siáu ah."

Shimamura siūⁿ boeh óa-kīn siáu-kông hoah siaⁿ ê Komako, soah khì hō͘ hiah-ê boeh ùi Komako chiap kòe Yoko ê lâng kheh tī piⁿ-á khì. Tán koh khiā-chāi, i gia̍h-thâu chi̍t-ē khòaⁿ, he thian-hô ná-chhiūⁿ sa-sa chi̍t-siaⁿ, lâu-ji̍p Shimamura ê hûn-su.

102. 天河 ná 像流入伊 ê 魂軀

Yoko lak 落 ê 二樓看台頂, 有兩三支柴柱 khi 落來, tī Yoko ê 面頂懸遐 tih 燒. Yoko he 會鑿人 ê 媠目睭瞌瞌, 下頦 taⁿ-taⁿ, 頷頸伸伸. 火 kuiⁿ tī 她白 sún-sún ê 面頂搖動.

Shimamura 忽然想起, 幾年前伊來這个溫泉浴場和 Komako 相會, tī 火車內看著野外 ê 燈火照 tī Yoko ê 面 ê 情境, 心肝又閣 phi̍h-pho̍k 顫. 忽然間, 彼火 kuiⁿ ká-ná mā 照出伊和 Komako 這幾年來 ê 代誌. 這中間也充滿一種講袂出 ê 苦痛和悲哀.

Komako ùi Shimamura 身邊 ná 飛 án-ne 走出來. 這和她尖叫, 掩目睭差不多是仝一个時間, mā 是眾人欶一口冷 khùi ê 彼个時陣. 

Tī 四界 lak, 浸水 ê 烏柴屑中間, Komako 拖 he 藝旦長長 ê 衫仔裾傱過. 她 kā Yoko 抱 tī 胸前行 tún 來. Tī 她 he 艱苦 kah 糾筋 ê 面下面, Yoko 垂落 ê 面死白, 無表情. Komako 所抱 ê, ká-ná 是家治 ê 犧牲, 家治 ê 罪孽.

眾人 hī-hōa 叫, 一下仔 tō kā 姻兩人圍著.

"閃. 請閃開."

Shimamura 聽著 Komako ê 喝聲.

"這个囡仔, 起痟, 起痟 ah."

Shimamura 想欲倚近痟狂喝聲 ê Komako, 煞去予 hiah-ê 欲 ùi Komako 接過 Yoko ê 人 kheh tī 邊仔去. 等 koh 徛在, 伊攑頭一下看, he 天河 ná 像發出 sa-sa ê 聲, 流入 Shimamura ê 魂軀.

Two or three beams from the collapsing balcony were burning over her head. The beautiful eyes that so pierced their object were closed. Her jaw was thrust slightly out, and her throat was arched. The fire flickered over the white face.

Shimamura felt a rising in his chest again as the memory came to him of the night he had been on his way to visit Komako, and he had seen that mountain light shine in Yoko's face. The years and months with Komako seemed to be lighted up in that instant; and there, he knew, was the anguish.

Komako put her hands to her eyes and screamed, and even as the crowd held its breath in that first gasp she broke away from Shimamura and ran toward the fire.

The long geisha's skirts trailing behind her, she staggered through the pools of water and the charred bits of wood that lay scattered over the ground. She turned and struggled back with Yoko at her breast. Her face was strained and desperate, and beneath it Yoko's face hung vacantly, as at the moment of the soul's flight. Komako struggled forward as if she bore her sacrifice, or her punishment.

The crowd found its various voices again. It surged forward to envelop the two.

"Keep back. Keep back, please." He heard Komako's cry. "This girl is insane. She's insane."

He tried to move toward that half-mad voice, but he was pushed aside by the men who had come up to take Yoko from her. As he caught his footing, his head fell back, and the Milky Way flowed down inside him with a roar.

Chi̍t-tâi phòng-phù hiàng kū hóe koh to̍h hit-pêng oan-oan chōaⁿ chi̍t-káng chúi kòe khì, he thâu-chêng hut-jiân chhut-hiān chi̍t-ê cha-bó͘ ê sin-iáⁿ. Yi tō sī án-ne lak lo̍h-lâi ê. He cha-bó͘ ê sin-iáⁿ tī khong-tiong sī thán-hoâiⁿ. Shimamura tio̍h chi̍t-kiaⁿ, m̄-koh pēng bô kám-kak hûi-hiám a̍h sī khióng-pò͘, kan-ta kám-kak he sī hui-hiān-si̍t sè-kài ê hoàn-iáⁿ. Ngē-chiaⁿ ê hûn-su tī khong-tiong lak lo̍h, piàn jiû-núi ah. M̄-koh, he ná pò͘-ang-á án-ne bô té-khòng, in-ūi bô-miā soah tit-tio̍h chū-iû, sī seⁿ hām sí tâng-chê thêng-chí ê chu-sè. Komako chiam-siaⁿ kiò chhut-lâi, nn̄g-lúi ba̍k-chiu uiⁿ tio̍h. Shimamura kim-kim khòaⁿ, ba̍k-chiu nih to bô nih.

Shimamura sī sáⁿ-mih sî-chūn jīn chhut he lak lo̍h ê cha-bó͘ sī Yoko neh? Kî-si̍t, tī chiòng-lâng suh chi̍t-kháu léng-khùi hām Komako chiam-kiò chi̍t-siaⁿ ê kāng hit-sî, Yoko ê kha-āu-tó͘ tī thô͘-kha mā kiù-kin tiuh chi̍t-ē, lóng sī kāng sî-chūn ê khoán.

Komako ê kiò-siaⁿ thàng-kòe Shimamura ê hûn-su. Yoko ê kha-āu-tó͘ kiù-kin hit-sî, Shimamura mā léng kah kha-bóe kiâng boeh kiù-kin. Ká-ná sī siū tio̍h sáⁿ-mih thòng-khó͘ hām pi-ai ê táⁿ-kek, sim-koaⁿ phi̍h-pho̍k tiô.

Yoko ê kiù-kin khin-khin-á, ba̍k-chiu chù-ì bē-tio̍h, chi̍t-ē-á tō thêng ah.

Tī Yoko kiù-kin chìn-chêng, Shimamura seng khòaⁿ tio̍h yi ê bīn hām yi he âng-sek chìⁿ-hoe ê kimono. Yoko sī thán-chhiò lak lo̍h ê. Saⁿ-á-ki hian kàu óa chi̍t-ki kha-thâu-u téng-koân. Lak tī thô͘-kha ê sî, kan-ta kha-āu-tó͘ kiù-kin, kui-sin iáu-sī m̄-chai-lâng. Shimamura chóng-sī kám-kak Yoko pēng bô sí. Yi lāi-bīn ê sèⁿ-miā tih choán-piàn, piàn-chò pa̍t-hāng mi̍h-kiāⁿ.

101. 感覺 Yoko 並無死

一台 phòng-phù 向舊火 koh to̍h 彼爿彎彎濺一港水過去, he 頭前忽然出現一个查某 ê 身影. 她 tō 是 án-ne lak 落來 ê. 彼查某 ê 身影 tī 空中是坦橫. Shimamura 著一驚, 毋過並無感覺危險抑是恐怖, 干焦感覺 he 是非現實世界 ê 幻影. 硬 chiaⁿ ê 魂軀 tī 空中 lak 落, 變柔 núi ah. 毋過, he ná 布尪仔 án-ne 無抵抗, 因為無命煞得著自由, 是生和死同齊停止 ê 姿勢. 若講 Shimamura 有閃出啥物不安 ê 想法, tō 是 he 坦橫 ê 魂軀敢會頭殼向下, 腰 a̍h 跤頭趺敢會彎曲. 看款有 hit-lō 可能, 毋過結局是維持坦橫 lak 落地.

"Aah!"

Shimamura 是啥物時陣認出 he lak 落 ê 查某是 Yoko neh? 其實, tī 眾人欶一口冷 khùi 和 Komako 尖叫一聲 ê 仝彼時, Yoko ê 跤後肚 tī 塗跤 mā 糾筋 tiuh 一下, 攏是仝時陣 ê 款.

Komako ê 叫聲迵過 Shimamura ê 魂軀. Yoko ê 跤後肚糾筋彼時, Shimamura mā 冷 kah 跤尾 kiâng 欲糾筋. Ká-ná 是受著啥物痛苦和悲哀 ê 打擊, 心肝 phi̍h-pho̍k 趒.

Yoko ê 糾筋輕輕仔, 目睭注意袂著, 一下仔 tō 停 ah.

Tī Yoko 糾筋進前, Shimamura 先看著她 ê 面和她 he 紅色箭花 ê kimono. Yoko 是坦笑 lak 落 ê. 衫仔裾掀到倚一支跤頭趺頂懸. Lak tī 塗跤 ê 時, 干焦跤後肚糾筋, 規身猶是毋知人. Shimamura 總是感覺 Yoko 並無死. 她內面 ê 性命 tih 轉變, 變做別項物件.

A line of water from one of the pumps arched down on the smoldering fire, and a woman's body suddenly floated up before it: such had been the fall. The body was quite horizontal as it passed through the air. Shimamura started back--not from fear, however. He saw the figure as a phantasm from an unreal world. That stiff figure, flung out into the air, became soft and pliant. With a doll-like passiveness, and the freedom of the lifeless, it seemed to hold both life and death in abeyance. If Shimamura felt even a flicker of uneasiness, it was lest the head drop, or a knee or a hip bend to disturb that perfectly horizontal line. Something of the sort must surely happen; but the body was still horizontal when it struck the ground.

Komako screamed and brought her hands to her eyes. Shimamura gazed at the still fonn.

When did he realize that it was Yoko? The gasp from the crowd and Komako's scream seemed to come at the same instant; and that instant too there was a suggestion of a spasm in the calf of Yoko's leg, stretched out on the ground.

The scream stabbed him through. At the spasm in Yoko's leg, a chill passed down his spine to his very feet. His heart was pounding in an indefinable anguish.

Yoko's leg moved very slightly, hardly enough to catch the eye.

Even before the spasm passed, Shimamura was looking at the face and the kimono, an arrow figure against a red ground. Yoko had fallen face up. The skirt of her kimono was pulled just over one knee. There was but that slight movement in her leg after she struck the earth. She lay unconscious. For some reason Shimamura did not see death in the still form. He felt rather that Yoko had undergone some shift, some metamorphosis.

100. Khòaⁿ tio̍h cha-bó͘ ê sin-iáⁿ lak lo̍h-lâi

Chia sī óa niû-á-pâng ê chhân-hûiⁿ. Hām Shimamura in tâng-chê kòe lâi ê chng-lāi ê lâng, tōa-pō͘-hūn lóng lâi tī chia.

Khòaⁿ-khoán hóe sī ùi khǹg tiān-iáⁿ-ki ê ji̍p-kháu to̍h khí-lâi ê. Niû-á-pâng chi̍t-pòaⁿ ê chhù-téng hām piah lóng sio khì ah, thiāu-á hām êⁿ-á ê kut-kè iáu tih puh-ian. Chhù lāi-té kan-ta chhù-téng-pang, piah-pang hām tē-pán, lāi-té khang-khang, mā bô sáⁿ-mih ian. Chhù-téng koàn chin chē chúi, khòaⁿ-khoán sī to̍h bē khí-lâi ah. He hóe-chheⁿ phùn sòaⁿ kàu thian-hô khì, Shimamura ká-ná koh hō͘ thian-hô khiú khì. O͘-ian chhèng hiàng thian-hô, thian-hô tian-tò hiàng lâu lo̍h-lâi. Chōaⁿ tùi chhù-téng í-gōa ê chúi iô-tāng, piàn chò pe̍h-sek ê chúi-bū, ká-ná sī thian-hô ê kuiⁿ só͘ chiò ê.

In-ūi niû-á-pâng kiam chò hì-pêⁿ, só͘-í ū chò chi̍t-ê hêng-sek-siāng ê jī-lâu khòaⁿ-tâi. Sui-jiân kiò jī-lâu, kî-si̍t bô koân. 100. 看著查某 ê 身影 lak 落來

遮是倚娘仔房 ê 田 hûiⁿ. 和 Shimamura in 同齊過來 ê 庄內 ê 人, 大部份攏來 tī 遮.

看款火是 ùi 囥電影機 ê 入口 to̍h 起來 ê. 娘仔房一半 ê 厝頂和壁攏燒去 ah, 柱仔和楹仔 ê 骨架猶 tih puh 煙. 厝內底干焦厝頂枋, 壁枋和地板, 內底空空, mā 無啥物煙. 厝頂灌真濟水, 看款是 to̍h 袂起來 ah. 毋過, 火 íⁿ 一直徙位, ùi 想袂到 ê 位忽 leh to̍h 起來. 三台 phòng-phù tō 緊緊濺水過, he 火星 tō 噴起來, koh 衝烏煙.

彼火星噴散到天河去, Shimamura ká-ná koh 予天河搝去. 烏煙衝向天河, 天河顛倒向流落來. 濺對厝頂以外 ê 水搖動, 變做白色 ê 水霧, ká-ná 是天河 ê kuiⁿ 所照 ê.

毋知當時來到身邊, Komako 捏著 Shimamura ê 手. Shimamura 越頭看一下, 無講話. Komako 猶是 ǹg 火看, 火 kuiⁿ tī 她 he 頂真, 小可紅紅 ê 面頂, ná 喘氣 án-ne 搖動. Shimamura 感覺心內有一陣激動. Komako ê 頭鬃髻鬆去, 頷頸伸長長. 伊 he 險仔伸去 kā 摸 ê 手指頭仔 tih 顫. Shimamura ê 手燒燒, Komako ê 閣較燒. 毋知 án-nóa, Shimamura 感覺離別已經迫近.

入口遐毋知是柱仔 a̍h 啥 koh to̍h 火燒起來 ah, phòng-phù koh 濺一港水過來, 柱仔和楹仔隨出白煙 koh chhi-chhi 叫, 紲 loeh tō 倒落去.

眾人攏欶一口冷 khùi, 干焦看著一个查某 ê 身影 lak 落來.

因為娘仔房兼做戲棚, 所以有做一个形式上 ê 二樓看台. 雖然叫二樓, 其實無懸. Ùi 這个二樓 lak 落來, 到地面 ê 時間真短, 毋過 lak 落 ê 姿勢, 目睭猶是有夠時間看清楚. 大概因為 lak 落 ê 姿勢奇怪, ná 像是布尪仔 án-ne, 一看 tō 知彼是已經毋知人 ê 狀態. Lak 到塗跤 mā 無聲. 四界 chiâu 是水, 所以 mā 無夯塗粉. Lak 落 ê 所在是 tī 拄拄 to̍h 起來 ê 新火和 koh to̍h 起來 ê 舊火中間.

They were standing in the field beside the cocoon-warehouse. Most of the crowd on the main street had poured into that same open space.

The fire had apparently started near the entrance, and the walls and roof of half the building had burned away. The pillars and beams were still smoldering. It was a wide barn of a building, only shingles and boarded walls and floors, and the inside was fairly free of smoke. Though the roof, soaked from the pumps, did not seem to be burning, the fire continued to spread. A tongue would shoot up from a quite unexpected spot, the three pumps would rum hastily towards it, and a shower of sparks would fly up in a cloud of black smoke.

The sparks spread off into the Milky Way, and Shimamura was pulled up with them. As the smoke drifted away, the Milky Way seemed to dip and flow in the opposite direction. Occasionally a pump missed the roof, and the end of its line of water wavered and rumed to a faint white mist, as though lighted by the Milky Way.

Komako had come up to him, he did not know when. She took his hand. He looked around at her, b u t said n othing. She gazed at the fire, the pulse of the fire beating on her intent, slightly flushed face. Shimamura felt a violent rising in his chest. Komako's hair was coming undone, and her throat was bare and arched. His fingers trembled from the urge to touch it. His hand was warm, but Komako's was still warmer. He did not know why he should feel that a separation was forcing itself upon them.

Flames shot up again from the pillars and beams at the entrance. A line of water was turned on them. Hissing clouds of steam arose as the framework began to give way.

The crowd gasped as one person. A woman's body had fallen through the flames.

The cocoon-warehouse had a balcony that was little more than a perfunctory recognition of its duties as an auditorium. Since it fell from the balcony, low for a second floor, the body could have taken but a fraction of a second to reach the ground; but the eye had somehow been able to trace its passage in detail. Perhaps the strange, puppetlike deadness of the fall was what made that fraction of a second seem so long. One knew immediately that the figure was unconscious. It made no noise as it struck the ground between the fire that had newly blazed up and the fire that still smoldered beyond. Water had collected inside the building, and no dust arose from the fall.

Hit-tâi phòng-phù lâi, Komako mā siám khì lō͘-piⁿ. Khòaⁿ tio̍h Shimamura, in nn̄g-lâng tō iū tâng-chê cháu. Khiā tī lō͘-piⁿ ê lâng-lâng kán-ná hō͘ phòng-phù khip-ín tio̍h, tòe tī āu-piah jek. Taⁿ in nn̄g-lâng mā lóng sī kóaⁿ óng hóe-chai hiān-tiûⁿ lâng-tīn ê sêng-oân ah-lah.

"Lí iáu-sī lâi ah. Chin ài tàu-lāu-jia̍t neh."

"Hmh. Bô-siá-sì ê phòng-phù neh. Sī Meiji sî-tāi í-chêng ê mi̍h-kiāⁿ."

"Sī ah. M̄-thang khì ku̍t-tò neh."

"Chiâⁿ ku̍t."

"Sī ah. Āu-pái tán sàu chi̍t-àm ê tōa hong-seh, lí chiah koh lâi khòaⁿ-māi. Hoān-sè lí bô hoat-tō͘ lâi kàu-ūi. Hit-sî liân thò͘-á, thī-ke lóng bih lâi bîn-ke-chhù." Put-sî ū chi̍t-kóa āu-bóe-lâi ê chng lih ê lâng, sì-kè kiò chhin-lâng ê miâ. Nā ū-lâng ìn, tō hoaⁿ-hí kah tōa siaⁿ kiò, mā kan-ta chiah-ê siaⁿ-im hián-chhut hiān-tiûⁿ ê oa̍h-la̍t. Hóe-kéng ê cheng-siaⁿ mā í-keng bô hiáng ah.

Khióng-kiaⁿ pa̍t-lâng khòaⁿ tio̍h, Shimamura chēng-chēng lī-khui Komako, khiā khì chi̍t-tīn gín-á āu-piah. Hóe sio kah kā gín-á haⁿh tò-thè. Kha-té ta̍h ê seh mā kán-ná sió-khóa sang khí-lâi ah. In-ūi hóe hām chúi, lâng-tīn thâu-chêng ê seh tih iûⁿ, ta̍h kah chiâu sī kha-ìn, lòm kô͘-kô͘.

彼台 phòng-phù 來, Komako mā 閃去路邊. 看著 Shimamura, in 兩人 tō 又同齊走. 徛 tī 路邊 ê 人人 kán-ná 予 phòng-phù  吸引著, 綴 tī 後壁 jek. 今 in 兩人 mā 攏是趕往火災現場人陣 ê 成員 ah-lah.

"你猶是來 ah. 真愛鬥鬧熱 neh."

"Hmh. 無捨世 ê phòng-phù neh. 是 Meiji 時代以前 ê 物件."

"是 ah. 毋通去滑倒 neh."

"誠滑."

"是 ah. 後擺等掃一暗 ê 大風雪, 你才 koh 來看覓. 凡勢你無法度來到位. 彼時連兔仔, 雉雞攏覕來民家厝." Komako án-ne 講, 綴 he 消防隊 ê 喝聲和人陣 ê 跤步聲 lú 講 lú 紲拍. Shimamura mā 感覺魂軀輕鬆.

會當聽著火焰 ê 聲 ah. 眼前 tō 有火舌 tih 颺. Komako 掠牢 Shimamura ê 手曲. 街路頂低 koh 烏 ê 厝頂予火照著, ná 像 tih 喘氣, kuiⁿ 一下, 暗一下. Phòng-phù ê 水流過跤底 ê 路. Shimamura 和 Komako 自然 mā 予人陣擋著, 停跤落來. 火場 ê 臭火焦味內底, 有煠娘仔 khok ê 臭臊味.

頭起先, 人人四界談論, 講火災是因為電影 ê film to̍h 火引起 ê, 講看電影 ê 囡仔一个一个 ùi 二樓 hông 抨落來, 講無人受 siang lah, 講好佳哉今年庄 lih ê 娘仔 khok 和米攏無囥入去, 等等. 今, 面對大火, 逐个攏恬恬, 毋管離火場 hūiⁿ a̍h 近, 逐个攏統一 tī 一遍恬靜 ê 氣氛中間. 逐个攏恬恬 tih 聽火 ê 聲和 phòng-phù ê 聲.

不時有一寡後尾來 ê 庄 lih ê 人, 四界叫親人 ê 名. 若有人應, tō 歡喜 kah 大聲叫, mā 干焦 chiah-ê 聲音顯出現場 ê 活力. 火警 ê 鐘聲 mā 已經無響 ah.

恐驚別人看著, Shimamura 靜靜離開 Komako, 徛去一陣囡仔後壁. 火 sio kah kā 囡仔 haⁿh 倒退. 跤底踏 ê 雪 mā kán-ná 小可鬆起來 ah. 因為火和水, 人陣頭前 ê 雪 tih 溶, 踏 kah chiâu 是跤印, lòm 糊糊.

Komako too had stopped to let it pass. She spotted Shimamura and ran along beside him. All down the road people who had stood aside fell in again as if sucked up by the pump. The two of them were now no more than part of a mob running to a fire.

"So you came. Always looking for excitement."

"That's right. It's a sad little pump, though, isn't it. The better part of a hundred years old."

"At least. Careful you don't fall."

"It is slippery."

"Come sometime when we have a real blizzard,

and the snow drives along the ground all night long. But you won't, of course. Rabbits and pheasants come running inside the house to get out of the storm." Komako's voice was bright and eager. She seemed to take her beat from the chanting voices a n d the tramping feet around her. Shimamura too was buoyed up by the crowd.

They could hear the sound of the flames now, and tongues of flame leaped up before them. Komako clutched at Shimamura's arm. The low, dark houses along the street seemed to be breathing as they floated up in the light of the fire and faded away again. Water from the pumps flowed along the street. They came against a wall of people. Mixed in with the smoke was a smell like boiling cocoons.

The same standard remarks were taken up in loud voices through the crowd: the fire had started at the projector; children had been thrown one after another from the balcony; no one was hurt; it was lucky there had been no rice or cocoons in the warehouse. And yet a sort of quiet unified the whole fiery scene, as though everyone were voiceless before the flames, as though the heart, the point of reference, had been" torn away from each individual. Everyone seemed to be listening to the sound of the fire and the pumps.

Now and then a villager came running up late, and called out the name of a relative. There would be an answer, and the two would call happily back and forth. Only those voices seemed alive and present. The fire-alarm no longer sounded.

Afraid people would be watching, Shimamura slipped away from Komako and stood behind a group of children. The children moved back from the heat. The snow at their feet was melting, while farther on it had already turned to slush from the fire and water, a muddy confusion of foot-prints.

M̄-koh, yi he sán-thiu ê phīⁿ hêng mā khòaⁿ bē bêng, sè-sè chhùi-tûn ê sek mā khòaⁿ bô. Shimamura bô hoat-tō͘ siang-sìn, he hoâiⁿ thiⁿ lâu kòe, bêng-liāng ê kuiⁿ chân, kèng-jiân chiah-nī im-àm. Tāi-khài sī chheⁿ ê kuiⁿ khah àm àm-tām ê goe̍h iā. Ná tōa tiâu kuiⁿ-tòa ê thian-hô, chhin-chhiūⁿ sī lâu kòe Shimamura ê hûn-su, phiau-liû kàu thó͘-tē ê chīn-pōng, khiā tī hia. Che sī chi̍t-chióng hân-léng ê che̍k-chēng, mā sī chi̍t-chióng iau-kiau, chi̍t-chióng sin-kî.

"Lí túiⁿ liáu-āu, góa boeh koai-koai kòe ji̍t-chí." Komako hiàng chêng kiâⁿ ná kóng, ná iōng chhiú chéng-lí sang khì ê thâu-chang-kòe. Kiâⁿ gō͘/la̍k pō͘, yi iū oa̍t-thâu kóng:

"Lí án-nóa lah? Mài án-ne lah."

Shimamura khiā tiām-tiām.

"Án-ne? Lí tán góa. Liâm-mi tâng-chê khì lí ê pâng-keng."

Komako tò-chhiú iāⁿ chi̍t-ē, tō cháu ah. Yi ê sin-iáⁿ ná chhiūⁿ khì suh-ji̍p soaⁿ-té. Thian-hô ê saⁿ-á-ki ká-ná hē lo̍h tī soaⁿ-me̍h chīn-pōng ê ūi, koh ùi hia hiàng thiⁿ-téng tián-khui i he hôa-lē ê khòng-khoah. Soaⁿ koh-khah im-tîm ah.

Shimamura kiâⁿ bô kúi-pō͘, Komako ê sin-iáⁿ tō hō͘ ke-lō͘ ê bîn-ke-chhù cha̍h tio̍h ah.

Ū thiaⁿ-e "iat-siò, iat-siò, iat-siò" ê hoah siaⁿ, khòaⁿ-e tōa-ke téng chi̍t-tīn lâng khiú siau-hông phòng-phù kiâⁿ. Tōa-ke téng lâng-lâng lóng hiàng thâu-chêng cháu. Shimamura mā lâi kàu tōa-ke. Nn̄g-lâng tú-chiah kiâⁿ ê lō͘, hām tōa-ke T jī-hêng sio-chiap.

Koh lâi chi̍t-tâi phòng-phù. Shimamura niū i seng kòe, tòe tī āu-piah cháu.

He sī chi̍t-tâi chhâ chò ê, iōng chhiú ah ê kū-sek phòng-phù. Chi̍t-tīn lâng tī thâu-chêng iōng tn̂g-tn̂g ê soh-á giú, koh ū chi̍t-kóa siau-hông-oân ûi tī phòng-phù piⁿ-á. He phòng-phù khòaⁿ-tio̍h sī sè kah bô-siá-sì.

98. 一陣人搝消防 phòng-phù 行

毋過, 她 he 瘦抽 ê 鼻形 mā 看袂明, 細細喙唇 ê 色 mā 看無. Shimamura 無法度相信, he 橫天流過, 明亮 ê kuiⁿ 層, 竟然 chiah-nī 陰暗. 大概是星 ê kuiⁿ 較暗暗淡 ê 月夜. 毋過, 這時 ê 天河較明亮過任何滿月 ê 天, tī 地面照無影 ê 微微仔 kuiⁿ 中間, 浮現出 Komako ê 面, ná 像一个古早面殼, koh 散發出查某人 ê 氣味, 實在真稀奇.

攑頭一下看, 天河 koh chhe̍h 落來, ká-ná 欲 siâm 這塊土地.

Ná 大條 kuiⁿ 帶 ê 天河, 親像是流過 Shimamura ê 魂軀, 漂流到土地 ê 盡磅, 徛 tī 遐. 這是一種寒冷 ê 寂靜, mā 是一種妖嬌, 一種新奇.

"你 túiⁿ 了後, 我欲乖乖過日子." Komako 向前行 ná 講, ná 用手整理鬆去 ê 頭鬃髻. 行五六步, 她又越頭講:

"你 án-nóa lah? 莫 án-ne lah."

Shimamura 徛恬恬.

"Án-ne? 你等我. Liâm-mi 同齊去你 ê 房間."

Komako 倒手颺一下, tō 走 ah. 她 ê 身影 ná 像去欶入山底. 天河 ê 衫仔裾 ká-ná 下落 tī 山脈盡磅 ê 位, koh ùi 遐向天頂展開伊 he 華麗 ê 曠闊. 山閣較陰沉 ah.

Shimamura 行無幾步, Komako ê 身影 tō 予街路 ê 民家厝閘著 ah.

有聽 e "iat-siò, iat-siò, iat-siò" ê 喝聲, 看 e 大街頂一陣人搝消防 phòng-phù 行. 大街頂人人攏向頭前走. Shimamura mā 來到大街. 兩人拄才行 ê 路, 和大街 T 字形相接.

閣來一台 phòng-phù. Shimamura 讓伊先過, 綴 tī 後壁走.

彼是一台柴做 ê, 用手壓 ê 舊式 phòng-phù. 一陣人 tī 頭前用長長 ê 索仔搝, koh 有一寡消防員圍 tī phòng-phù 邊仔. 彼 phòng-phù 看著是細 kah 無捨世.

The shape of her slightly aquiline nose was not clear, and the color was gone from her small lips. Was it so dim, then, the light that cut across the sky and overflowed it? Shimamura found that hard to believe. The light was dimmer even than on the night of the new moon, and yet the Milky Way was brighter than the brightest full moon. In the faint light that left no shadows on the earth, Komako's face floated up like an old mask. It was strange that even in the mask there should be the scent of the woman.

He looked up, and again the Milky Way came down to wrap itself around the earth.

And the Milky Way, like a great aurora, flowed through his body to stand at the edges of the earth. There was a quiet, chilly loneliness in it, and a sort of voluptuous astonishment.

"If you leave, I'll lead an honest life," Komako said, walking on again. She put her hand to her disordered hair. When she had gone five or six steps she turned to look back at him. "What's the matter? You don't have to stand there, do you?"

But Shimamura stood looking at her.

"Oh? You'll wait, then? And afterwards you'll take me to your room with you."

She raised her left hand a little and ran off. Her retreating figure was drawn up into the mountain. The Milky Way spread its skirts to be broken by the waves of the mountain, and, fanning out again in all its brilliant vastness higher in the sky, it left the mountain in a deeper darkness.

Komako turned into the main street and disappeared. Shimamura started after her.

Several men were pulling a fire-pump down the street to a rhythmical chant. Floods of people poured after them. Shimamura joined the crowd from the side road he and Komako had taken.

Another pump came down the street. He let it pass, and fell in behind it.

It was an old wooden hand-pump, ridiculously small, with swarms of men at the long rope pulling it and other swarms to man it.
