13. Chò pêng-iú chiah ē kú-tn̂g
Chiah-ê iú-koan Ji̍t-pún bú-tō ê ōe, hō͘ cha-bó͘ tùi i chhin-kīn, ē-sái kóng, sī i chiah-ê tì-sek, kú-nî liáu-āu tī hiān-si̍t tiong ê lō͘-iōng. M̄-koh, Shimamura ka-tī mā m̄-chai, hoān-sè i mā ná-chhiūⁿ tùi-thāi Se-iûⁿ bú-tō án-ne, tih khòaⁿ chit-ê cha-bó͘.
In-ūi án-ne, i kám-kak ka-tī lí-tô͘ tiong chiah-ê tām-po̍h ai-chhiû ê ōe, ká-ná chhiok-tāng tio̍h yi seng-oa̍h tiong ê khó͘-thàng, soah khí pháiⁿ-sè, ká-ná ka-tī tih khi-phiàn yi.
"Nā án-ne, āu-pái góa tō chhōa chhù lih ê lâng lâi, thang hām lí hó-hó thit-thô."
"Hmh, hit-lō tāi-chì góa chiâⁿ chheng-chhó lah." Cha-bó͘ bî-bî-á-chhiò, siaⁿ-im ah-kē kóng, koh sió-khóa hián-chhut gē-tòaⁿ ê bô͘-iūⁿ, kóng:
"Góa mā khah kah-ì án-ne, chò-pêng-iú chiah ē kú-tn̂g."
"Án-ne, lí thè góa kiò chi̍t-ê."
"Taⁿ?"
"Hmh."
"Kiaⁿ tio̍h. Tng-thâu-pe̍h-ji̍t hām cha-bó͘ ū sáⁿ hó kóng ê?"
"Góa bô-ài lâng kéng chhun ê."
"Lí án-ne kóng, bē-su chit-ê un-chôaⁿ e̍k-tiûⁿ sī thàn tōa-chîⁿ ê só͘-chāi; m̄-sī án-ne lah. Kan-ta khòaⁿ chng lih ê khoán, lí kám bē bêng-pe̍k?"
Cha-bó͘ ê kháu-khì giâm-siok koh hùn-khài, koh it-chài kiông-tiāu chia bô hit-chióng cha-bó͘. Shimamura piáu-sī hoâi-gî. Cha-bó͘ khí chèng-keng, m̄-koh yi thè chi̍t-pō͘ kóng: boeh chò bô, tio̍h khòaⁿ gē-tòaⁿ ka-tī, tòa gōa-kháu nā bô sū-sian kā tiàm-thâu-ke kóng, án-ne gē-tòaⁿ tio̍h ka-tī hū-chek, hiō-kó án-nóa tiàm-thâu-ke bô koán. M̄-koh, nā ū sū-sian kā tiàm-thâu-ke kóng, he tō sī i ê chek-jīm, í-āu i ē chiàu-kò͘ lí kàu té. Chha-pia̍t tī chia.
"Chek-jīm sī chí sáⁿ?"
"Tō sī ū gín-á, a̍h sī sin-thé pìⁿ pháiⁿ chit-lūi ê tāi-chì."

13. 做朋友才會久長
Chiah-ê 有關日本舞蹈 ê 話, 予查某對伊親近, 會使講, 是伊 chiah-ê 智識, 久年了後 tī 現實中 ê 路用. 毋過, Shimamura 家治 mā 毋知, 凡勢伊 mā ná 像對待西洋舞蹈 án-ne, tih 看這个查某.
因為 án-ne, 伊感覺 ka-tī 旅途中 chiah-ê 淡薄哀愁 ê 話, ká-ná 觸動著她生活中 ê 苦痛, 煞起歹勢, ká-ná 家治 tih 欺騙她.
"若 án-ne, 後擺我 tō chhōa 厝 lih ê 人來, thang 和你好好 thit-thô."
"Hmh, hit-lō 代誌我誠清楚 lah." 查某微微仔笑, 聲音壓低講, koh 小可顯出藝旦 ê 模樣, 講:
"我 mā 較佮意 án-ne, 做朋友才會久長."
"Án-ne, 你替我叫一个."
"今?"
"Hmh."
"驚著. 當頭白日和查某有啥好講 ê?"
"我無愛人揀賰 ê."
"你 án-ne 講, 袂輸這个溫泉浴場是趁大錢 ê 所在; 毋是 án-ne lah. 干焦看庄 lih ê 款, 你敢袂明白?"
查某 ê 口氣嚴肅 koh 憤慨, koh 一再強調遮無彼種查某. Shimamura 表示懷疑. 查某起正經, 毋過她退一步講: 欲做無, 著看藝旦家治, 蹛外口若無事先 kā 店頭家講, án-ne 藝旦著家治負責, 後果 án-nóa 店頭家無管. 毋過, 若有事先 kā 店頭家講, he tō 是伊 ê 責任, 以後伊會照顧你到底. 差別 tī 遮.
"責任是指啥?"
"Tō 是有囡仔, a̍h 是身體 pìⁿ 歹這類 ê 代誌."

It might be said that his knowledge was now for the first time in a very great while being put to use, since talk of the dance helped bring the woman nearer to him; and yet it was also possible that, hardly knowing it, he was treating the woman exactly as he treated the occidental dance.
He felt a little guilty, as though he had deceived her, when he saw how the frivolous words of the traveler who would be gone tomorrow seemed to have struck something deep and serious in the woman's life.
But he went on: "I can bring my family here, and we can all be friends."
"I understand that well enough." She smiled, her voice falling, and a touch of the geisha's playfulness came out. "I'd like that much better. It lasts longer if you're just friends."
"You'll call someone, then?"
"Now?"
"Now."
"But what can you say to a woman in broad daylight?"
"At night there's too much danger of getting the dregs no one else wants."
"You take this for a cheap hot-spring town like any other. I should think you could tell just from looking at the place." Her tone was sober again, as though she felt thoroughly degraded. She repeated with the same emphasis as before that there were no girls here of the sort he wanted. When Shimamura expressed his doubts, she flared up, then retreated a step. It was up to the geisha whether she would stay the night or not. If she stayed without permission from her house, it was her own responsibility. If she had permission the house took full responsibility, whatever happened. That was the difference.
"Full responsibility?"
"If there should happen to be a child, or some sort of disease."
