11. Góa bē chhōe lí chò he lah
"Siàu-liân tō hó. Siàu-liân cha-bó͘ kok hong-bīn lóng khah bē chhut chha-chhò. Mài kāu-ōe kah thó-ià tō hó. Bián siuⁿ khiáu, ài khah chheng-khì-siùⁿ ê. Boeh khai-káng ê sî, góa tō chhōe lí."
"Góa bē koh lâi ah."
"Kóng he sam-pat-ōe."
"Chin ê, bē lâi ah. Lâi chia chhòng-sáⁿ?"
"Góa siūⁿ boeh chheng-chheng pe̍k-pe̍k hām lí kau-pôe, bē chhōe lí chò he lah."
"Kiaⁿ tio̍h."
"Nā hoat-seng hit-chióng tāi-chì, hoān-sè bîn-á-chài tō bē siūⁿ boeh koh khòaⁿ tio̍h lí, mā bô hèng-chhù hām lí khai-káng ah. Ùi soaⁿ-téng lo̍h-lâi chit-ê chng, lân-tit tú-tio̍h lâng, kám-kak chhin-chhiat, góa bē chhōe lí chò he lah. Chóng-kóng, góa sī chi̍t-ê lí-kheh."
"Hmh, án-ne bô m̄-tio̍h."
"Sī ah. Chiū lí lâi kóng, he nā sī lí bô kah-ì ê cha-bó͘, āu-kái tú-tio̍h góa, lí sim lih mā bē sóng-khoài. Nā sī lí soán hō͘ góa ê cha-bó͘, tō bē án-ne lah."
"Góa put-koán!" yi piàⁿ-sè kóng chi̍t-kù, oa̍t-bīn iū-koh kóng:
"Án-ne kóng mā bô m̄-tio̍h."
"He sī chi̍t-ē-á niâ. Bô-ì-bô-sù. Bô kú-tn̂g ê kám-chêng."
"Tio̍h. Khak-si̍t ta̍k-ê lóng sī án-ne. Góa chhut-sì tī Káng-khu. Chia sī un-chôaⁿ e̍k-tiûⁿ." ko͘-niû iōng thán-pe̍k ê kháu-khì kóng:
"Lâng-kheh tōa-pō͘-hūn sī lí-kheh, sui-bóng góa iáu sè-hàn, thiaⁿ-kòe kok-chióng lâng kóng, m̄-koán gōa-nī kah-ì, hit-tong-sî m̄-kóng kah-ì lí ê lâng, hō͘ lí hoâi-liām, hō͘ lí khǹg tī sim-koaⁿ. Lī-pia̍t liáu mā sī án-ne. Tùi-hong ū-sî siūⁿ khí lí, siá-phe hō͘ lí. Tāi-khài tō-sī án-ne."
Cha-bó͘ ùi thang-á-tâi khiā khí-lâi, chit-má khin-khin chē-lo̍h tī thang-á piⁿ ê tatami. Yi ê bīn-sek ká-ná sī tih hoâi-liām hūiⁿ-hūiⁿ ê kòe-khì, chiah hiông-hiông chē lâi Shimamura ê sin-piⁿ.
Cha-bó͘ ê siaⁿ-im chhiong-móa chin-si̍t ê kám-chêng, tian-tò hō͘ Shimamura kám-kak pháiⁿ-sè, ná ē chiah kín tō phiàn tio̍h yi.

11. 我袂揣你做 he lah
"少年 tō 好. 少年查某各方面攏較袂出差錯. 莫厚話 kah 討厭 tō 好. 免傷巧, 愛較清氣相 ê. 欲開講 ê 時, 我 tō 揣你."
"我袂 koh 來 ah."
"講 he 三八話."
"真 ê, 袂來 ah. 來遮創啥?"
"我想欲清清白白和你交陪, 袂揣你做 he lah."
"驚著."
"若發生彼種代誌, 凡勢明仔載 tō 袂想欲 koh 看著你, mā 無興趣和你開講 ah. Ùi 山頂落來這个庄, 難得拄著人, 感覺親切, 我袂揣你做 he lah. 總講, 我是一个旅客."
"Hmh, án-ne 無毋著."
"是 ah. 就你來講, he 若是你無佮意 ê 查某, 後改拄著我, 你心 lih mā 袂爽快. 若是你選予我 ê 查某, tō 袂 án-ne lah."
"我不管!" 她拚勢講一句, 越面又閣講:
"Án-ne 講 mā 無毋著."
"彼是一下仔 niâ. 無意無思. 無久長 ê 感情."
"著. 確實逐个攏是 án-ne. 我出世 tī 港區. 遮是溫泉浴場." 姑娘用坦白 ê 口氣講:
"人客大部份是旅客, 雖罔我猶細漢, 聽過各種人講, 毋管 gōa-nī 佮意, 彼當時毋講佮意你 ê 人, 予你懷念, 予你囥 tī 心肝. 離別了 mā 是 án-ne. 對方有時想起你, 寫批予你. 大概 tō 是 án-ne."
查某 ùi 窗仔台徛起來, chit-má 輕輕坐落 tī 窗仔邊 ê tatami. 她 ê 面色 ká-ná 是 tih 懷念 hūiⁿ-hūiⁿ ê 過去, chiah 雄雄坐來 Shimamura ê 身邊.
查某 ê 聲音充滿真實 ê 感情, 顛倒予 Shimamura 感覺歹勢, 那會 chiah 緊 tō 騙著她.

"Someone young. You're less apt to make mistakes when they're young. And someone who doesn't talk too much. Clean, and not too quick. When I want someone to talk to, I can talk to you."
"I'll not corne again."
"Don't be foolish."
"I said I'll not corne again. Why should I come again?"
"But haven't I told you it's exactly because I want to be friends with you that I've behaved so well?"
"You've said enough."
"Suppose I were to go too far with you. Very probably from tomorrow I wouldn't want to talk to you. I couldn't stand the sight of you. I've had to come into the mountains to want to talk to people again, and I've left you alone so that I can talk to you. And what about yourself? You can't be too careful with travelers."
"That's true."
"Of course it is. Think of yourself. If it were a woman you objected to, you wouldn't want to see me afterwards. It would be much better for her to be a woman you picked out."
"I don't want to hear any more." She turned sharply away, but presently she added: "I suppose there's something in what you say."
"An affair of the moment, no more. Nothing beautiful about it. You know that--it couldn't last."
"That's true. It's that way with everyone who comes here. This is a hot spring and people are here for a day or two and gone." Her manner was remarkably open--the transition had been almost too abrupt. "The guests are mostly travelers. I'm still just a child myself, but I've listened to all the talk. The guest who doesn't say he's fond of you, and yet you somehow know is--he's the one you have pleasant memories of. You don't forget him, even long after he's left you, they say. And he's the one you get letters from."
She stood up from the window sill and took a seat on the mat below it. She seemed to be living in the past, and yet she seemed to be very near Shimamura.
Her voice carried such a note of immediate feeling that he felt a little guilty, as though he had deceived her too easily.
